Notes on Installing
Net Bulletin
Any Windows® PC can be used with the NetBulletin system.
Installation of the NetBulletin Rapid Notification System consists of
running the SETUP.EXE program on the NetBulletin diskettes (or in
the NetBulletin download) and installing NetBulletin into a selected directory.
Once installed, the following directories should exist:
| Directory/Folder |
Description |
| NetBulletin |
Main Files |
| NetBulletin\client |
Client Files |
| NetBulletin\data |
Data Files |
| NetBulletin\docs |
Documentation Files |
| NetBulletin\images |
Image Files |
| NetBulletin\zones |
Zone Files |
You access the NetBulletin
control panel (NetBulletin.EXE) by clicking on the
NetBulletin
desktop icon or via the WIndows RUN command.
Setup for the NetBulletin
Rapid Notification System consists of accessing
the NetBulletin
control panel and ensuring that all setup parameters are
configured correctly. Please pay particular attention to paths setup and
zone management which must contain accurate entries for proper NetBulletin
operation.
The NetBulletin system also includes a Windows background program named
XA6.EXE that runs (via network login script) on each PC in order to poll
that same client PC for new alert information.
The NetBulletin setup program automatically creates a \CLIENT directory
under the main directory in which NetBulletin is initially installed.
Included in this \CLIENT directory are the following files:
XA6.EXE: Client PC executable file
CTL3D.DLL: Microsoft support DLL file
For initial setup and testing purposes, the following steps are
recommended for any networked client PC:
-
Step 1: Create C:\SHARED directory on the client PC
-
Step 2: Mark C:\SHARED directory as Shared, Full Access, No Username/Password
-
Step 3: Copy files from \CLIENT directory to client PC C:\SHARED directory
-
Step 4: Run "XA6.EXE TEST" from the client PC
Once the polling interval of approximately 5 seconds has elapsed, the
PC will automatically display a test alert window.
At this point, the NetBulletin control panel may be accessed for testing of
actual alerts. This is accomplished by editing a zone (ie, location) to
add the above client PC's Computer Name or IP Address as an alert
recipient. Then, from the NetBulletin control panel, an alert may be issued
by clicking on any of the alert icons.
Whenever an alert is issued, a new XA6.INI file is sent to all PC's in
the specified alert zone with the following alert information:
Poll= The polling interval in seconds
Cycl= The maximum number of polling intervals (cycles)
Winx= The alert window width
Winy= The alert window height
Back= The alert window background color
Desc= The alert description/title
Beep= Include alert beeps
Exit= Allow users to exit XA6
Txt1= The alert line 1 text
Fnt1= The alert line 1 font characteristics
Txt2= The alert line 2 text
Fnt2= The alert line 2 font characteristics
Txt3= The alert line 3 text
Fnt3= The alert line 3 font characteristics
Txt4= The alert line 4 text
Fnt4= The alert line 4 font characteristics
Txt5= The alert line 5 text
Fnt5= The alert line 5 font characteristics
Txt6= The alert line 6 text
Fnt6= The alert line 6 font characteristics
Once testing is completed, the XA6.EXE file can be added to the login
script for each of your network users. Note that the XA6.EXE does not need
to be physically installed on each PC ... it only needs to be executed for
each PC.
By default, XA6.EXE uses C:\SHARED as the client PC shared directory. This
may be changed during login script by passing a new directory on the
XA6.EXE command line per the following example:
N:\COMMON\XA6.EXE C:\ALERTS
